While promoting Men in Black III, Josh Brolin gave a short interview for Collider.com. The last question was about the upcoming Hunchback movie. He seems very excited about the project and thinks that filming will take place in either France or England. While I’m all about filming on location, Hunchback films are better when filmed on a set. Sets enable the production to create a more accurate Notre Dame as it looked in the 15th century. Both the 1923 and the 1939 were films on sets and they had amazing set design. Also regardless of enthusiasm, I don’t see Brolin as Quasimodo. He just seems wrong in type. While I want to say I’ll hold off judgement till I at least see a trailer, I probably won’t. I will say this though, if Megan Fox comes anywhere near this project I will boycott it.
What do you think; Josh Brolin as Quasimodo, Yay or Nay?
As much fun as they are, I’m sick of all the overtly sexual Esmeralda characters!
They’re too independent, which negates the whole infatuation with Phoebus. And while I enjoy the Phoebus-less option (1997), it doesn’t make sense to me.
I want to see Esmeralda done right!
It’s true, Esmeralda’s ignorance of her sex appeal coupled with her innocence is what makes her alluring and interesting. Making her independent and sexy I guess makes her more likable to general audiences but that’s not the point of her character. I think the 1923 version got her the closes to the book but still I want another version of Esmeralda that keeps close to the book
Since I haven’t seen much of Josh Brolin’s work, I can only base his acting on a movie I wasn’t all that into: True Grit. So, based on that alone I’m not sure he’ll be a good Quasimodo. To me, Brolin just doesn’t have that much soul and the performance may fall flat.
As far as the Megan Fox thing…I’m an atheist and I’m praying to god that she doesn’t get cast in this one.
As for set v. on location I would prefer a set due to the scene in Lord of The Rings; the one where Frodo and his pal are leaving home and you can see a car go by in the background. We don’t need to see Claude about to hang Esmeralda and see someone in the audience on an IPhone.
An Actors that fall flat in acting shouldn’t play Quasimodo. Maybe Brolin’s excitement for the role will help. I hope Fox doesn’t play Esmeralda but there are some people who think she should. I suppose casting will come down to whether they want a sweet Esmeralda or a more sexy one. My guess with the action/adventure genre there might be a meet in the middle but I would say they’ll go for a sexy one.
