The Disney Movie that eked out my 17th position might not be everyone’s cup of tea but it just holds a curious little place in my heart.
Fundamentally Alice in Wonderland doesn’t have a complex plot, it’s just a little girl walking from point A to point B in the pursuit of a white rabbit. The devil is in the details and this movie is full of weird, wonderful and memorable characters and scenes. The villain, The Queen of Hearts, is a different sort of villain as she doesn’t scheme or plot. She instead is just ill-tempered and mad, like everyone else in Wonderland.
The animation and art style are very expressive, weird, playful and imaginative. There are just so much visual oddness that it’s hard not to smile.
The parts of Alice in Wonderland are more than the sum total. I think it’s forgivable as the overall vibe and aesthetic as well as the mad cast of characters are so iconic. Plus when the lead is as likable and endearing as Alice, contrasting against the madness of the world all the element mix together perfectly.
One complaint is no Jabberwocky but we get the poem in song form, so again it’s forgivable.
Also I love this creature design, they are so cute. The Tulgey Wood scene and creatures don’t get nearly enough recognition.
