No Worries, It’s a good one

Pumba, Simba & Timon, The Lion King, Disney 1994

I don’t think it an unpopular opinion that The Lion King is one of Disney’s best works. Which is pretty ironic given the stories that this one was considered the lesser production to Pocahontas, which was thought to the more important work. However The Lion King proved to be the more beloved and popular of the two.

It’s not hard to see why, the movie starts with a sweeping and majestic opening. Along with The Hunchback of Notre Dame, it has one the best opening in any Disney movie. The rest of the animation is fun, exuberant, grand, scary when it needs to be and devastating. The recaptures Bambi and Littlefoot’s pain for a new generation. Though I would argue that it’s more pivotal towards his character development than the other two otherwise he might have more like Scar than Mufasa.

The story takes is cues from Hamlet but is sprinkles in some mythical aspects. Like Scar impact on the environment and Simba instantly fixing nature when he ascends the throne, it’s a case of “ it’s just monkeys singing songs, mate. Don’t think too hard about it.

Speaking of the song they are all great. I don’t think a single song is weak or lesser quality than others.

The characters are all enjoyable. They all have clear personalities and motivates. They all have sense of inner working even if it’s deeper than others.

The Lion King is great with a great level of emotional depth that makes it feel like an earnest piece of cinema albeit with some fart jokes.
