Episode 11: The Clay Army

Quasimodo, Esmeralda, François and Andras, The Magical Adventures of Quasimodo Episode 11
Quasimodo, Esmeralda, François and Andras, The Magical Adventures of Quasimodo Episode 11

As is the norm with this show there is some public event that Frollo ruins with magic and the Gang of Pals has to thwart him.

The event of this episode is The March of Progress, which has ten winners get 500 Gold pieces for some good work. Quasimodo’s friend, Roger, whom I don’t recall meeting before, pitched a hospital for the poor with hot water as a heating source.

Now Frollo gets wind of the prize money and says the most “Frollo-like” thing he has said thus far. He wants the all the prize money so that he can get the materials to make a Philosopher’s stone so that he can turn everything he owns in to gold, except Azarof, because Azarof’s good dog. It is still weird that he has a dog but it doesn’t matter.

Frollo’s plan is to make a small clay army of cute gargoyles to steal the coins (which is all the gold of France so not JUST the prize money) and he is successful and uses the gold as a blanket. The scale of the clay gargoyles is all over the place but that adds to the chaotic charm of the show.

However what he didn’t account for is that the King calls the best force in France to find the gold, The Gang of Pals!

So as they do they find one of the small gargoyles and follow it to Frollo’s spooky-ooky underground tunnels. Quasimodo still hates rats but rats hate François’ poetry/prayer. Long story short, they get the gold and escape by bribing the good boy Azarof and Frollo has a literal temper tantrum.

The small gargoyles made this episode cute. I do find the insanity that Frollo brings more appealing however the show is very much set on its formula which is just how it functions as far so any little difference like tiny magical clay gargoyles over that inn from the last episode is welcome.

Also Frollo’s gargoyle Dragon works too hard.

Also, also,  in this episode we get a hint of what Frollo’s dating bio would be like: he’s “Brilliant, Handsome, Sensitive and above a Liar.” Would you swipe left or right?

I guess I was off on the episode count, oops. Anyway, Once is back and I didn’t notice, oops. While the show was on hiatus it was announced that this is the final season, which isn’t really that surprising but it does seem unlikely that Hunchback will ever enter into the narrative. Though the way the show films its season as it being aired who knows. It’s very doubtful but the upshot is the season will at least have a conclusion since the producers knew the cancellation could happen and will give the longtime fans the resolution they deserve.

So how was the episode? It was pretty good.  Aside from the Lucy, Henry and Jacinda scenes, the episode advanced the plot and characters. We learned how Zelena got her groove back. We also learn how Robin and Zelena were in the Enchanted Forest 2.0 in the first place. Though I really can’t see Zelena being into the whole dive aesthetic

The central theme of this episode is the length of maternal love. Zelena nearly dies for Robin and Victoria/Rapunzel does die to save Ivy/Druzilla. It was rather touching in the end to have Victoria/Rapunzel die for her  Ivy/Druzilla. I will miss Victoria/Rapunzel though.

But on the upside I did like the interaction Zelena had with the other characters this episode, especially with Nook (Hook or wish-Hook or Rogers.) Seriously  the realm doesn’t get a name but everyone else gets half-dozen names. Also glad to see gal-pal Regina back.

I feel like I  should be a little annoyed that one of the supposed big bads of the season seems to be Madame Leota from the Haunted Mansion ride but I’m not. So long as it’s fit into the overall convoluted narrative, whatever.  I wonder if, in theory, Esmeralda COULD be one of the Coven members. It would make her evil but she was nearly burned for being a witch, so maybe? Doubtful but I wouldn’t mind.

Anyway, it was a pretty good episode.

SPOILERS!

Well at least this episode explains the Lucy scenes from the season 6 finale, only issue is that it was edited and structured in such a way in the finale to make it seem like the events  are way more interesting than they actually are. SO Lucy was born in the knock-off Enchanted Forest and curses yadda yadda.

This episode is classic OUAT, in that it’s convoluted as F.  So here is the twist, first the show makes you think that Victoria a.k.a Lady Rapunzel Tremaine cast the curse only to find out that her daughter Druzilla a.k.a Ivy had a big hand it in it and that it was her curse. Turns out, No Regina cast the curse to save Henry for plot-poison. And also it’s part if the curse for Lady Rapunzel Tremaine to think she cast the curse. Then Ivy tries to get Anastasia’s’ magic but it was all a rouse by Gothel to bring back her coven, or the Eight Witches which Ivy is part of, but Gothel dispatches Ivy because double crosses. Anyway Surprise the Coven is the bad guys and the were only clumsy established with regard to the Eloise Gardner case for maybe some reason.

And Zelena is back. Her name is Kelly because you get it right? RIGHT? GREEN! Anyway for some reason, not explain she and Robin are ALSO in the Knock-off Enchanted forest. Sure every character get three names but you can’t name the realm there are all from one? Geeze writers. Also Zelana has her magic back in said realm? How? Remember just last season she lost it? Now it’s back? Oh geeze.

And then there’s Lucy and Henry. Lucy is in her sleeping death curse thing but true loves kiss from Henry, who now BELIEVES, doesn’t work because Lucy doesn’t believe. To the show’s credit this was established in the first season when Snow White forget her love for David and I guess it worked when Hook tried to kiss Emma out being the Dark one in season 5. Trouble with this scene of Henry not waking Lucy is it doesn’t feel earned. First season did this scene at end of the season, a full season with 20+ and multiple scenes with Emma and Henry. There wasn’t even a scene in the flashback showing Lucy and Henry’s father/daughter dynamic, basically goes from baby and Ivy’s curse prophecy/warning about Lucy’s eighth birthday to her eighth birthday.

While I enjoy Zelena, this episode feel flat which in a way is impressive since it reveals a lot and was really convuled in its twist but it was a big load of meh.

Anyway Once upon a Time in now on hiatus till March  2nd 2018.
